Last Friday night I played my first show in just shy of a year... like... 11.2 months. Wow. I guess sometimes it's good to take a break, but that's a little ridiculous! It was getting to the point where I could hardly call myself a live-pa artist anymore. My friend Ross was in charge of the music for a biggish private house party, and pretty much told me I had to play, and wouldn't take no for an answer. I hadn't even plugged the gear in in six months or more. Strangely enough, when I did plug the gear all in, the sequencers were still full of techno. What's more, since I hadn't heard it in almost a year, I wasn't sick of it anymore!
The show went very well, though I kinda forgot to record it. Can't really blame me, as it's the first time I've done a show in so long. I basically played five tracks to a packed house of about 70 very receptive people - man, seriously, if only every show was an audience comprised entirely of my closest friends. A few things that the show pointed out to me, however: for one, my sound is still feeling full and rich to my ears, but... well... it's a little dated. Nobody is really listening to 4/4 hard techno anymore, even though they're dancing to the same tempo as before. I need to update my beats. For two, I've picked up a lovely Clavia Nord Modular G2 keyboard in the last year, which is IMHO the most powerful, splendid and wonderful synthesizer on the planet. However, I've barely put *any* time into it! I know that synth is as deep as I want to make it, and with my synthesis experience I should be able to really make it scream - but I just need to sit down and start filling it with custom patches. Between that and Ableton running on my sexy little Macbook Air... could be a nice sleek little rig. We'll see.
