In this section, you'll find pictures from my insane techno studio, as well as photos from live-pa shows at raves, clubs and house parties. I'm lucky to have a very talented photographer for a girlfriend - Erin is always taking photos, and my live shows and gear collection are often a source of subject material for her. I'm also always looking for more, so if you've got photos from a MUX show, drop me a line and let me know.

Studio Pics, October 2005

Whew, it's been a long time since I last posted pictures!  A lot has happened - I'm now engaged to Erin, we've purchased and renovated a house together, and I've finally finished putting together my basement studio.  The first pic is a view down the north wall of the studio, where all the synths reside... the crowd poster is for inspiration while I rehearse my live act. ;)

The second pic is a shot of the tabletop of the live rig, with the latest addition being the x0xb0x, which I built myself from the kit.  Mine is #12 of the initial run of 100 - it sounds fantastic, but it sounds even better sequencing the SH-101. :)   The rack on the floor holds a RackRider power conditioner, BBE Sonic Maximizer, the mighty Waldorf Pulse, and the Ensoniq DP/4+ effects rack.

The next shot is a pic of the closet - I had to cut another 8cm or so off the tubes to get the rack to fit into the ex-closet - it's a snug fit, but it works well.  New addition: a Kenton Pro-DCB MIDI-DCB converter, finally!  The closet isn't fully hooked up yet, only the Juno-60 is actually useful in this shot... I need to sort out a way to get audio from the Simmons boxes easily over to the computer for sampling.  I'm thinking it may be time to invest in some patchbays and snake cable.

And lastly, a shot of my workstation - I tried to migrate over to using a mac, using Erin's old G4 PowerBook, but Ableton Live just *crawled* on it.  I really, really wanted to have separate computers for work and studio, though, so when my office gave me a new ThinkPad, I jumped at the chance and moved my dual-purpose work/studio desktop computer into the studio for good, and removed all trace of work from it.  The ugly wall of velvet is made from the ugly curtains that adorned the house when we first moved in; it prevents slapback sound reflections, which should help my mixing.  They're hung about a foot from the back wall, with foam and moving blankets hung behind them to create a "dead end" to the studio.  The leather couch was donated to the cause by Trent, and much thanks indeed.

'The Listening Room', September 10th 2005

The Listening Room 2005 was a blast this year, as always - my third year in a row playing the Van Listening Room.  This time was especially interesting, as it had a space/sci-fi theme; one of the "features" was a troupe of local Star Wars cosplay enthusiasts.  It was kinda surreal partying with Boba Fett and Darth Vader, but people seemed to dig it.  We got to hear excellent livepa sets from Pleasure Frequency, Evil G, the Frazzletones and GI Jody - that dome is by far my favourite place to hear live techno, expecially from those guys.

Trancemission 8 was very much like Trancemission 7 - similar awesome vibe, same location, same burner party a few hundred feet away, same wicked fun.  I got to share a stage with my close friends again, and rock a crowd at one of the most beautiful partyspots on the planet.  My set was at three am, and went very well.  I have a short video clip from 'Rocker' that I should really put online.

These pics (taken by Erin) are sized at 1400x1150, to make for good wallpaper for my ThinkPad.

'The Listening Room Calgary', June 25th 2005

The Listening Room Calgary was a strange sort of show - it was the first time we attempted to throw a Listening Room event in another city, and that presented a tonne of hurdles.  Despite another large party happening the same night, we managed to bring in a few hundred people and throw down the techno in a proper fashion.  I got the chance to share a stage with GIJody and the Jonnay again, as well as Alberta live-pa acts Honeey Mustard, Evil G and Psilosly.

This was the first public appearance of "One Night In East Van"... that track has grown up quite a bit.

Another Uoy Kcuf at Lick, sharing a stage with Granolaboy and GI Jody, for a "Pod6"-themed night.  Uoy Kcuf isn't operating anymore, which I find totally sad - even though it was on a Thursday night, there was a good core group of techno enthusiasts who always seemed to make it out.  Lick isn't a particularly nice bar, and it's in a pretty sketchy neighborhood, but hey, it's techno.
