MUXLIST ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1.) UPCOMING SHOWS (four of them!)
2.) Demo and Video Downloads
3.) Actively seeking bookings

Holas,

This is the sixth email to this newsletter list.  News time!

*******************************************************************

1.) UPCOMING SHOWS!

Wow.  FOUR shows booked!  One coming up pretty quick, too.. I'll be
performing a live set at "Trancemission 7", the upcoming Soundproof
party on July 17th - this Saturday!  This is the seventh year running
for this massive outdoor party, and best of all, admission is free.
Just get yourself out there - I can't tell you where it is just yet, but
the location is beautiful, there'll be a LOT of folks there, and it'll
be well worth the drive.

I only have an image of the front of the flyer, unfortunately:
http://mux.ca/images/flyers/trancemission_7_front.jpg

And a link to the promoters' website:
http://www.soundproof.ca

Another show coming up the following week - on Monday, July 26th, I'll
be throwing down the mad live techno again, but this time at "ouY kcuF",
a clubnight by Soundproofers SonOfJacob and The Trucker.  This clubnight
is every Monday at "Lick", above the Lotus Sound Lounge at 455 Abbot Street.

Here's the poster - I bet you've seen this one around town:
http://mux.ca/images/flyers/fuckyou480x640.jpg

And a third show, also an outdoor - the Beheshto and Ducky.ca crews are
throwing "Noor".  Last year, it went off, and this year is looking
insanely great - loooots of talented folks playing.  I'll be throwing
down the techno on the main stage of this two-stage party!  My set is
right in the middle of primetime - 3am in the main room, as they say.

Here's some shots of the flyers:

...and a link to the promoters:

Erin and I will be visiting Calgary on July 30th thru August 2nd - I'm
currently talking with some party crews there, so who knows, maybe I'll
be bringing along the live rig. :)

And lastly, I've been booked to play a set of live techno on September
11th at "The Listening Room".  This party is *awesome* - live electronic
music and visuals at the MacMillan Space Center (aka the Vancouver
Planetarium)!  Last year tickets sold out, and we had to turn folks away
at the door - so make sure to get tickets early!  All live-pa in the
Star Chamber, and the Pound Recordings crew will be back again doing
stompy breaks in the second room.

Heh.  I'm considering doing something very different with this set -
changing up my choons from the usual rave techno to maybe a set of
deeeeep minimal... we'll see.

2.) Demo and Video Downloads

With the help of Adam Kutulu, a friend from New Brunswick, I've got my
demo CD and a wicked six-minute concert video (courtesy of the mad video
editing skillz of my girlfriend Erin) up for download, using BITTORRENT.
If you haven't heard of BitTorrent yet, you should definitely check it
out.  This should mean that the downloads will be super-fast.

The page with my demo and video downloads:

If you need a BitTorrent client: (you need one, well worth installing)

If this is the first you've heard of BitTorrent, check out: ;)

*******************************************************************

3.) Actively seeking bookings

That's right - my live set is practiced and tight, and I'm gunning to
play as much as possible; nothing is more fun than throwing down the
techno.  If you know someone booking acts for a party, please let them
know about my website or email address!  Better yet, give them a copy of
my demo CD. :)

It should be noted that my music, equipment and performance are better
suited to raves or very large house parties, and might not go over as
well in gallery or cafe events... :)

*******************************************************************

Anyhow, that's it for this edition of the MUX announce list.  Stay
tuned, check out the free MP3's on my site, and if you're in Vancouver I
hope to see you at Trancemission 7 this Saturday!

Cheers,
- Drew.

MUXLIST ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1.) UPCOMING SHOWS!
2.) Demo CD Downloads
3.) New Live recordings released

Holas,

This is the fifth email to this newsletter list.  News time!

**********************************************************************

1.) UPCOMING SHOWS!

And one is coming up quick, too.  The crew at SPARKY has invited me back
to perform a second time!  I will be performing a one-hour set of my
usual stompy, thumpy, dancey rave techno at "Tapinis" this Thursday, May
the 13th.  Tapinis is in Gastown, underneath the Purple Onion - it's a
recently-renovated heritage building, used to be the "Comedy Cave", and
is now a live-music venue.  There are a multitude of beers on tap, and
apparently they have the "best martini selection in Gastown".

Here's a link:  http://www.vutag.com/sparky

I will be performing at 11pm sharp - I know some of you folks have to
work in the morning.  I've got a bunch of new material that I can't wait
to try out on a really big soundsystem!  I've started to stretch my legs
a bit with the new MPC, and it's really been opening my eyes to new ways
to structure the techno - also, listening to all that acid techno lately
hasn't hurt either. :)

A second upcoming gig is at "Zone5 Transfer", a proper rave in Vancouver
celebrating the fifth anniversary of the renowned local party crew
Morning Glory.  Crazy Dave tells me that this will be an intimate
gathering of about 150 people, with an in-town venue and his usual
enormous soundsystem - I've also seen some of the DJ lineup for the
evening, and it looks like it's going to be a blast.  I'll be sending
another announcement in a few weeks, when I have more to announce.

The pre-flyer: http://www3.telus.net/morningglory/zone5-pre.gif

I'm still gunning for slots at a few of the big outdoor festivals this
Summer - if you hear of anyone booking, please let them know that I'm
available, and let me know so I can get a copy of my demo CD out to them
ASAP!

**********************************************************************

2.) Demo CD Downloads

Well, I've been trying to get the BitTorrent downloads for my demo CD up
and running, and *have* had some success - however, the big file (a full
BIN/CUE/CCD image of my demo CD) is seeding very slowly currently, and
it'll be about 24h before it reaches the full speed - if you have a
bunch of bandwidth and want to jump in early, feel free, but just know
that it may be slow for the first while.  I'll have the second torrent
up in the next day or so, after we get a scan of the cover art for
inclusion in the pack. :)

The page for the BitTorrent links is http://mux.ca/torrents.html - as
before, you can still download the individual tracks at
http://mux.ca/music/2004_demo, but there are definitely advantages to
having the full CD:

        * Print a copy and impress your friends
        * Listen to the music at greater than 128kbps
        * Watch the exclusive video (not available on any website!)
        * Give copies to your fave promoters
        * Share the musical love!

There'll be another link on the torrent page tomorrow, for a torrent
containing all the MP3's from the demo, cover art and gear jpg's, and an
info .TXT file - a package more suitable for sharing out over
filesharing networks.  Please copy and distribute!

**********************************************************************

3.) New Live Recordings Released

You may have seen them on my website, but I haven't sent out an announce
email in a while, so let me call attention to them again:  I have
released two single-song recordings from my last set at Sparky.  The
tracks were recorded to two devices at once; the line-outs from the
mixer were recorded using a Sony DAT recorder, and the room was mic'd
using a stereo mic and my minidisc recorder.  The DAT, unfortunately,
had some skips early on in the set, so I was not able to release the
full set as I had hoped - but there were no skips during the tracks
"Collaborate" and "Daytrip", so I mixed the recordings together and
released the outcome.

The recordings are available for download at the usual place:
http://mux.ca/tunes.html.  Please feel free to copy and distribute these
files!

I'm particularly happy with these two - I knew that the technique of
mixing two sources together could work, but I hadn't yet had a gig where
both recordings went properly.  I think the sound of the audience really
enhances the recording, and gives it a much more "live" feeling - but
without the 'off the mixer' recording, there's just not enough bass to
listen to on a serious stereo. :)

**********************************************************************

Anyhow, that's it for this edition of the MUX announce list.  Stay
tuned, check out the free MP3's on my site, and if you're in Vancouver I
hope to see you at Tapinis this Thursday!

Cheers,
- Drew.

Subject: (mux): Show tonight!
From: Drew Smith <drew@mux.ca>
Date: Wed, 25 Feb 2004 13:18:51 -0800

Holas,

Just a quick email to remind you that I'll be performing a MUX liveset
tonight at The Caprice nightclub at 967 Granville Street, Vancouver, at
11pm.  There's also some fantastic DJs spinning house, progressive and
techno, so I personally recommend you show up early (I'd say 10:30 at
the latest, the earlier the better) and have a few drinks. ;)  Cover is
only $5, and I should be done by 12:00-12:30am, so you can get home
early enough to avoid a bad work/school day tomorrow.  Or stick around,
the music doesn't stop until 2am.

AIM://multiplex0r:

(12:41:44) multiplex0r: Rule, or rule utterly.  There is no suck.
(12:42:00) Arashi 2K3: bzzt. good try. you shoulda said "no way, caprice
will be crying for its mom when i'm done with it"
(12:42:01) Arashi 2K3: that's better
(12:45:18) multiplex0r: heh
(12:45:29) multiplex0r: think hard about that tho
(12:45:33) multiplex0r: do I really *want* them to cry?
(12:47:01) Arashi 2K3: not "them". the place itself should cry from
being worked.
(12:47:07) Arashi 2K3: it'll be like "ow!"
(12:47:14) Arashi 2K3: and you'll be like "thats ok baby, every club
cries the first time it gets muxed"

RAVE RAVE! TECHNO TECHNO!  WHOOOOO!  See you in a few hours!

Cheers,
- Drew.

MUXLIST ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1.) SHOW CHANGED!
2.) Upcoming show!
3.) Demo audio recordings released
4.) Gear changes

Holas,

This is the fourth email to this newsletter list.  News time!

************************************************************************

1.) IMPORTANT!!  THE UPCOMING SHOW WAS SUPPOSED TO BE TONIGHT, WEDNESDAY
THE 18TH, BUT IT HAS BEEN MOVED AHEAD A WEEK TO THE 25TH!

Sorry for any inconveniences - I sincerely hope nobody went to the
Caprice tonight -  I know we handed out a good hundred or so flyers with
the 18th on them, but unfortunately the night has been moved.
Apparently, tonight the Caprice has been rented out for a scene in an
upcoming movie, and they can't have rave techno blasting while they're
trying to shoot film.  I even offered to waive my usual booking fees and
perform in their movie for free, but my suggestion fell upon deaf ears.

DJ Lace, in a noble gesture, refunded us the money we spent having the
card-flyers made up - but it was hard to look at the remaining few
hundred cards lying there unloved, so Erin and I ran over to the dollar
store, picked up a bottle of whiteout, and manually changed the dates on
every one of them.  Then we got some more printer ink and cardstock, and
made even more flyers!  We'll be out flyering this weekend, possibly at
John Tennent's 2h live-pa at "Deepen" on Saturday night... if you're
around and want to help hand out flyers, let me know and we'll try to
hook you up with a few before the weekend.

************************************************************************

2.) MUX Live-PA Set at "Sparky"

On Wednesday February 25th, 2004, I will be performing a one-hour set of
live rave techno at the new clubnight "Sparky".

DJ Lace, James Brown and Eric Lewis have teamed up to make a very
promising new clubnight on Wednesdays at the Caprice - this posh new
upscale club now drops the pretensions for one night a week to showcase
the best of Vancouver's up-and-coming live electronic talent!  The two
performances so far (Jay Tripwire, aka "Mr. Barcode" and Fish aka
"Transgress" (also known as "Koolatron" and "1/3rd of Inject")) have
been *excellent* - and just as a reference point, the week prior to
THAT, the venue was the site of Richie Hawtin's "Closer" tourdate for
Vancouver.  The soundsystem is amazing, the people are cool, the drink
specials are... well, ok, they're acceptable - but most importantly, the  techno is awesome!  Everyone I've talked to says that Sparky could
become the big, friendly, great location, great music, unpretentious
clubnight for 2004.

I've been working really hard on the live set, integrating the new
sampler/sequencer (see news item #3) and practicing every night.  This
will be the best MUX set to date!  Given that it's a Wednesday, and I
know some of you have work or school in the morning, I've decided to
start my set earlier so that more people can enjoy it.  I recommend that
you come pretty early though, as the DJs are world-class, spinning
progressive, tribal and tech-house.  I will be performing an hour-long
set starting at about 11pm.  Come out and support the Vancouver live
electronic music scene - bring your friends and dancing shoes!

Once again - Wednesday, February 25th, at the Caprice nightclub, 967
Granville Street, Vancouver.  Just take a bus or skytrain to Granville
and walk up a few blocks, it's on the west side of the street - you
can't miss the big blue vertical "CAPRICE" sign. :)

************************************************************************

3.) Some of you have already heard this (pardon the pun), but here it is
again:  I've released the AUDIO portion of my upcoming "MUX 2004 Live-PA
Demo" CD.  The full release will have extra pics, audio, and video in
some kind of only-when-you-put-it-in-your-computer fashion, but from
your car CD player's perspective, there'll only be eight tracks of
delicious rave techno for you to enjoy.  For now, those eight tracks are
available for you to download on the "tunes" page on my website,
http://mux.ca!

The tracks were all recorded, arranged and mastered in a single weekend
- straight from the gear into Logic Audio, then out to Soundforge, then
into a Linux machine running LAME to turn them into 128k MP3 files.  Not
only are these MP3's free to download, I encourage you to copy them,
give them away for free and share them on filesharing networks!

With regards to the full demo CD - I'm only making 100 original CD's,
and about 20 of them are already earmarked for mailing out to promoters
and record labels.  If you're interested in owning a piece of MUX
history, let me know early so I can set a copy aside for you.

If you DON'T get a chance to get an original CD from me, don't fret -
I'll be releasing a .ISO image on the internet for download and
distribution, probably with a BitTorrent stream available.  I'm
sincerely hoping that those of you in other cities (or even here in
Vancouver) will grab a copy of this and burn a copy or three to give to
your favourite local promoters, so that I might one day get booked to
throw down the rave techno in your town. :)

************************************************************************

4.) There's been some changes to my live rig, bringing the sequencer
side a little more into the year 2004... I STILL DO NOT USE A LAPTOP!
Yeah, I'm aware I'm kind of shooting myself in the foot with that one,
but y'know, when you stare at a computer all day for a dayjob, the last
thing you want to do at night is use a computer for your hobby.  Gear
keeps the fun in making techno - the SH-101 isn't a very complex
synthesizer, by anyone's standards, but the more I use it, the more I
learn about it, the more I realize there is to know about it.  With
software, I don't see myself ever learning a single softsynth well
enough to develop a musician-instrument relationship with it, y'know?
There's tools, and there's "extensions of self"...

<GEAR GEEK PART>

ANYWAY, the gear has undergone a small evolvement - the Alesis MMT-8
(and accompanying Alesis DataDisk backup unit) have been passed along
the crew to the famous ex-Calgary acid techno rockstar GIJody -
incidentally, famous Vancouver techno DJ rockstar Son Of Jacob is also
now beginning to produce with an MMT-8.  I have also passed along my
Yamaha SU10 sampler to the dynamic duo of Thomas and Rich, who will be
using it at their set at Sparky on March 3rd, incidentally the day
before my birthday.  Replacing the MMT-8 and SU10 in my live rig is the
lovely new addition; Akai's 2004 flagship sampler, the MPC1000!

The MPC1000 is an upgrade in a lot of ways - where the MMT-8 sequencer
gave me eight track-mute buttons (which I use *extensively* for live
arrangement in my sets), the new MPC gives me *sixty-four*.  Where the
SU10 gave me 384k of memory for a maximum of 48 tiny samples, the MPC
gives me 32 megs of stock RAM (upgradable to 128M), a CompactFlash slot,
and USB access to the memory from my desktop!  And yes, it works in
Linux. :)

The current live rig uses the MPC1000 as the "brains" of the operation,
sequencing in pattern mode using mute-tracks, sending notes and control
messages to the MIDI-modified Roland SH-101 monosynth, MIDI-modified
Simmons SDS-800 drum brain and Waldorf Pulse Plus bass monosynth.  The
MPC also sends MIDI clock signals to synchronize the sequencer in my
Korg ER-1 drum machine, Nord Micro Modular insane-o supersynthesizer,
and to sync beatmatched effects in the Ensoniq DP/4+ multi-fx.
Everything plugs into a Mackie CR-1604 battlemixer, with a DBX166XL
compressor for the kickdrum and SH-101, Electrix FilterQueen and
EQKiller, and an RNC compressor on the main outputs.

</GEAR GEEK PART>

(sorry, non-geeks! :)

************************************************************************

Anyhow, that's it for this edition of the MUX announce list.  Stay
tuned, check out the free MP3's on my site, and if you're in Vancouver,
I hope to see you out at the Caprice next Wednesday!

Cheers,
- Drew.

Subject: (mux): Free Halloween Party Tonight!  MUX Liveset!
From: Drew Smith <drew@mux.ca>
Date: 31 Oct 2003 12:24:45 -0800

Holas,

Last night, as I was sitting in a pool of pumpkin guts in Granolaboy's
kitchen, I remembered that I should probably send out another email to
this list, to remind you all of the party tonight.

Seriously, I was up to my ankles in seeds and goo.  Tania and Jody and
crew managed to come up with 20 pumpkins to add to the extensive
decorations, and Ben, Drew (another Drew, just to confuse matters),
J-Stone, Chris and Kelly, Ryan, Trevor, and about twenty others were
over there having a bit of a pre-party.  I got to hear Granolaboy, San
Fran House DJ's Ben and Drew, and acid-techno superstar GIJody mixing it
up all night - I think they even recorded it.  I should have been back
at my place practicing my set, but the beer was flowing, the people were
of the coolest variety, and the music was *excellent*.

Basically, last night cemented into my mind that tonight is going to be
one hell of a Halloween party. :)

Have you made your plans for the evening yet?  You're coming to Spooky
Doom, right?  If not, surf over to http://halloween.granolaboy.net to
see if that'll help convince you.  Some of the high points of this
party:

-*- our own Imported Visuals Guy!  c60 Media from Calgary, working the
video mixer with two VCR's, two DVD's, and a computer full of
weirdness.  Seven TV's and two projectors!

-*- our very own Tania, heading up the decorations committee!  The
amount of time and effort this woman is expending on decorations is...
well, frankly, it's unhealthy.  It looks awesome tho. :)

-*- two import DJ's from San Francisco (up just for this party!), two
local DJ's, and of course, a completely, totally, utterly awesome
Live-PA act.  Maybe I'm biased... no, actually, I just rule. ;)

The party starts at 9pm and goes until 2am.  There's a fully-stocked
bar, a *wicked* soundsystem (there's already a really good soundsystem
at the bar, and we're *doubling* it for this party), and fun people.
Sorry about the shutting down at 2am thing - if you're not done partying
for the night at 2am, we recommend you come to this party until 2am,
then head for Organix at Club23, which is about a $6 cabride away.

I'll be doing a one-hour set of live techno, from 1:00am until 2:00am
(woo!  headlining!  go me!).  I've been in the studio for the past month
honing the live set, and I'm ready and itching to drop the techno on a
crowd.

To recap:  tonight, 9:00pm - 2:00am, the Waldorf Astoria (the "pub"
side, NOT the Tiki Room!!), 1489 East Hastings Street, Vancouver.

        See you there!

        Cheers,
        - Drew.
