This is a section for me to rant and rave about whatever I feel like - it may or may not have anything to do with music. Actually, there's very little chance it'll have anything to do with music, as there are other blog sections to cover those topics. Hey, I still have a life outside the studio, though it might be hard to convince my friends and family of that sometimes...

Having a girlfriend that is a stupendous web geek does have its advantages - it's nice to have a search engine optimization expert in the house, for instance, and when I'm having problems with CSS she's right upstairs, able to be interrupted with my inane questions. Anyway, she's big into the whole web 'scene', and one of the new web apps that is making the rounds is 'Twitter'. It's basically a bridge between SMS, instant messaging and a website - I know, sounds simple, right? You set up an account, then people can 'follow' you around. Just like when you find a cool link and paste it to everyone in your IM list, now you can paste inane life-updates to your cellphone or IM client and everyone who's following you will receive them on their cell/IM client. It's microblogging - dumb, but it's proving to be fun. Trent is right though, it's lacking 'group' capability - ie, 'send this update only to my friends in Vancouver' as opposed to 'send this to everyone who's following me'. Anyway, if you're into it, my twitter account is, unsurprisingly, http://twitter.com/mux. |

You're going to see a lot of changes here in the very near future - I, along with the other 30-odd folks in the company, have lost my Linux network administrator job of six years. Some people would call that "unemployed". I prefer to pronounce it "professional musician". ;) We got a severance package, and I plan to apply for EI as soon as I'm eligible. For the next several months, I intend to spend a full-time-job's worth of time in the studio, so all the projects I've been putting off are now my main focus... |

Heh, I haven't done much with the techno in the last few days. Last thing was Monday night, where I finished sampling all the ER-1 patterns into Ableton Live, saved them out as .WAV loops, and loaded them into the MPC. Downside: I figured out *after* mapping about 70 sequences that I actually was triggering the samples once per bar, when the samples are actually four bars long. Sheesh, gotta do all the sequencing over again, can't have a crash cymbal triggering every bar... :)
Instead, this week, I've been working on building these things: http://www.ladyada.net/make/spokepov
I ordered a bunch of the kits for me and my friends, they're made by the same girl who made the x0xb0x kits, so they're great quality. I've built two for my magnificent steed, and hopefully they'll be up and running soon. I'm having a problem now with the dongle, I can't seem to load an image into the spokepov... |
