Strange as it may sound, the studio isn't all about the music for me. Live-pa is equal parts music and technology, and some days it's quite hard to figure out which parts I enjoy most. The thrill of the tech is that often, there's nobody else on the planet working on quite the same problem as I am, and the challenge is what keeps me coming back to it year after year. The live-pa rig is more than a collection of parts; it is a finely tuned machine, a carefully crafted system, a weapon of bass destruction. I'm fond of telling friends and detractors alike, "every man needs a model train set. mine just happens to make techno."

Heh.
Well, yeah, back in April, I was in fact gigging again. At least I did one gig, and while it was a great deal of fun and an excellent launch to a summer of amazing adventures, all it really did was remind me that 2009 just doesn't have room for the dozens if not hundreds of hours of work needed to properly prepare for live sets.
Instead of techno, I've turned my focus on my lifestyle; I've moved out of my basement and onto a 39-foot sailing trimaran named 'Tie Fighter', and I'm living the technomadic dream. The muse has told me in no uncertain terms that I am to focus my creative energies on writing music for the guitar and mandolin, and I have started singing again after an eight-year absence. Being 'MUX' was fun, and perhaps I'll find that the drive to create pounding techno beats will return, but for now I've packed up the synths and put them into storage. I've been sailing around the Gulf Islands, I'm working on an album of acoustic music, and I'm even tossing around the idea of dipping my toes in the world of DJing - but who knows? This year is about adventure, not about sitting in my basement staring at a computer screen.
I'll leave this site online, but most of my web offerings are now being published on my blog site, http://disengage.ca. |

Crazy! Flash forward another few months, and suddenly I'm gigging again. :) More info about the past couple of shows if you follow the 'read more' button, but the really important bit for you to take away from this post is just this: I AM NOW ACTIVELY SEEKING BOOKINGS FOR PARTIES! If you're throwing a dance party, or know someone who is, I'm available and ready to rock. |

As of March 31st, I am now officially an unemployed bum a professional musician. We got a few months of severance pay, so I figure I can take these months and spend a fulltime dayjob's worth of effort in the studio, learning how to translate the ideas in my head and in my sequencers into finished, polished, sale-worthy recordings. Ideally, I'd like to start shopping some tracks around to labels, but with the way vinyl has been going lately, I'm wondering if it's better to put that time into developing a netlabel. Regardless, since work technically tapered off a couple of weeks ago, I've been spending a lot of time in the studio already, and have been inviting folks over to hang out... |

Argh - got some great news and some frustrating news. On one front, the string of non-bookings is broken; I've got two upcoming shows, a week (and a continent!) apart. I've been booked for Soundproof's "Trancemission 9", for the third year in a row, which is an honour and a privilege - this is an annual free party out at Mile36 that just epitomizes the whole BC outdoor rave experience... it's the same night as the Burning Man party again this year, which means a great, diverse party crowd. I wouldn't consider missing this party.
A week after that I'm off to New Brunswick, via Nova Scotia, to visit my folks. My friend Malte in Halifax has booked me for some sort of Friday night gig, about which I know very little. My last gig in Halifax went splendidly though, so I'm really looking forward to it. It won't be much of a vacation, though, as pretty much the whole thing will be running around like mad trying to visit all the folks we need to see.
The frustrating news is that the work on the "ultimate rackmount livepa computer" project is halted while I wait for the motherboard to arrive - apparently it will come into stock on July 19th. *sigh*. The Trancemission show is on July 22nd, nowhere near enough time to assemble and test the gear. |
