Rave rave, techno techno! I mean, studios are fun and all, but for me the real point of all this stuff is the dancefloor. Something deep inside keeps making me want to unhook all the gear, pack it up, drag hundreds of pounds of flightcases (ok, more like 250lbs total) into a car, and into a club or party, hook it up, play the techno, then do the whole thing in reverse. There is nothing finer than seeing a dancefloor moving to beats you've made, and the feeling you get guiding the techno up and up and up into a huge whirling vortex of sound, then DROPPING it... can't be adequately explained, but the rush is the most addictive thing ever. :)
The Listening Room Calgary was a strange sort of show - it was the first time we attempted to throw a Listening Room event in another city, and that presented a tonne of hurdles. Despite another large party happening the same night, we managed to bring in a few hundred people and throw down the techno in a proper fashion. I got the chance to share a stage with GIJody and the Jonnay again, as well as Alberta live-pa acts Honeey Mustard, Evil G and Psilosly.
This was the first public appearance of "One Night In East Van"... that track has grown up quite a bit.
Another Uoy Kcuf at Lick, sharing a stage with Granolaboy and GI Jody, for a "Pod6"-themed night. Uoy Kcuf isn't operating anymore, which I find totally sad - even though it was on a Thursday night, there was a good core group of techno enthusiasts who always seemed to make it out. Lick isn't a particularly nice bar, and it's in a pretty sketchy neighborhood, but hey, it's techno.
I played a set at the annual Burning Man "Decompression" party in Calgary, thrown by the local burner community, in which Shell and the Jonnay are very active. The party was excellent, and I got to hang out with a lot of people I hadn't seen in ages. Jonnay threw down the livepa techno accompanied by Jen on vocals, which was a treat.
"Just What The Doctor Ordered" was a blast - the "Dopamine Rebound" crew invited me to play a set in spite of previous bad blood, much respect for that. Out of ten sets, there were *four* live-pa acts at this party - good to see that live techno is finally starting to get a toehold in Vancouver's tough scene. Also appearing on the bill were Dr.Doom, Aya and Transgress.
The fine gentlemen at "Kcuf Ouy" had me back to throw down again, this time with two live-pa sets in one night... also appearing was Ricardo Almeida, an awesome guy with mad, mad production skills.
This was the most packed I'd seen the clubnight so far - I personally blame the fact that there were two live-pa acts, plus several special days for the upper ranks of Vancouver's techno elite... Trevor "SonOfJacob" Jacobson and Jon "Little Jon" both celebrated their birthdays. :)
